Father of four taught at Gaelscoil and won county title in 2000

TULLAMORE is in shock at the sudden death of a local primary teacher and former footballer with the local GAA club.
Richie O'Mahoney, a married father of four from Knockowen, taught at Gaelscoil an Eiscir Riada and was on the Tullamore team that won the Offaly senior football title in 2000.
In a tribute posted on social media on Wednesday evening, Tullamore GAA Club recalled how the Kerry native had been a successful footballer in his home county.
The tribute said: "It’s a dark day for the club, the town and well beyond following the news of Richie Mahoney’s sudden passing.
"A native of the village of Riasc on the Dingle Peninsula in Kerry, Richie was a stalwart of An Ghaeltacht, who he captained to the West Kerry Championship in 1991, their first since 1970 (a picture below shows an awe-struck Marc and Tomás Ó Sé gazing at Richie after the final).
"The previous year, he was part of the West Kerry side that won the county senior title, with the team managed by his clubmate, the late Páidí Ó Sé.
"He has been described as an early standard-bearer in a club that was making its way through the lower reaches of Kerry football at that time, winning a novice title in 1992, a junior title the following year and another West Kerry title in 1997.
"His preparation was meticulous with every detail, right down to how he packed his gear, attended to and he was ahead of his time in many respects; Richie was championing warm-ups and stretching when they were unfashionable and somewhat frowned upon 30 years ago. His drive helped to set a standard in his home club that carried them for years after he had left, with Tullamore the beneficiaries when he finally departed.
"Having been on the teaching staff at An Gael Scoil an Eiscir Riada in Tullamore, from where he commuted to play for An Gaeltacht for many years, Richie threw in his lot with the Tullamore and, entering a dressing room with a very limited history of success, he brought a much-needed winning mentality with him.
"An unflinchingly hard and tough defender, he was a key member of the side that won the Offaly Senior Football Championship in 2000, one of our club’s most cherished successes as it ended a 23-year wait for the Dowling Cup. Who knows, without the guile and knowhow of Richie O’Mahoney, it just mightn’t have happened.
"Having won Munster and All-Ireland junior titles with Kerry in 1994, Richie was also part of the Offaly panel that won the Leinster title at that grade in 1998 before losing the All-Ireland final to Tipperary.
"Although basketball was another of his passions and where he immersed himself in coaching with the local club, he was also a valued coach in our club at stages over the years, as well as in his school.
"His tragic passing leaves an enormous void in his adopted town, which he has done so much to shape in so many ways.
"Our sympathies to his wife Breda, children Rebecca, Aoibheann, Cian and Mia, sisters in law Bernie and Marie, brothers in law Finbar and Keith, parents in law PJ and Mary Shannon, staff and students, past and present, at An Gael Scoil an Eiscir Riada, where Richie was a much-loved teacher and all in his home club of An Ghaeltacht.

Tullamore Basketball Club also posted a tribute: "It is with great sadness, and with heavy hearts that we announce the untimely passing of Coach Richie O’Mahoney. Richie gave so much to our club here in Tullamore and took pride in the development of many of our young players and teams. Our deepest sympathy and condolences are with the O’Mahoney family at this sad time, and of course we extend this to those who played under Richie’s coaching and guidance over the years. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam."
Mr O'Mahoney's remains will be reposing at his home on Friday (June 21) from 3pm until Rosary at 7pm.The removal will take place on Saturday morning at 9.40am to the Church of the Assumption, Tullamore, arriving for Funeral Mass at 10am. A private cremation will take place after Mass.
