Love sweet potato fries! I buy them in frozen food section regularly. I'm going to try this recipe so I can make them fresh when I want some. I'm sure it's much better... Tks!

  4. Miranda says:

I made these tonite as a side for dinner. They turned out perfect! Even tho some were a little crispier it was a nice surprise. The taste was amazing! Little sweet, little salty. I will definitely make these more often! Thanks for the recipe :)

  5. Sarah says:

Okay so I started making these and then read the reviews and got super nervous! But they turned out AMAZING. They were cut thick so maybe that's why they didn't burn. I also made sure to check on them every 15 minutes and turn them often.

  6. Kristal says:

Rinse the potatoes and pat dry first before mixing in all the ingredients.

  7. Joanne MacDonald says:

I've read some of the earlier comments, and agree, but when I made them from this recipe, I had already cooked sweet potatoes in several different ways and knew that they are much faster to cook than regular potatoes, so I did them for 12 minutes at 400 degrees and they were fine. But I do find it hard to believe that anyone who had made them before would suggest 40 minutes. Perhaps it was a typo or a momentary brain flip, because your recipes are normally bang on!But I did enjoy them ... Knowing that cooked, they are softer than potatoes means no surprises with the end product.

  8. Nathalie says:

I tried to do this recipe and just couldn't. I bought the raw sweet potatoes from the super market and washed them (as we do in Mexico with fruits and vegetables) and tried to cut them as french fries... but it was SO HARD! The sweet potato is very hard to cut, I don't know if this is like it's supposed to be (and I should buy a bigger / sharper knife) or should I bake them first for them to be easy to cut?Anyway I just put them in the oven now, the whole thing, will try bake them a little and then cut them. Or maybe it is because the sweet potatoes in Mexico are different? Thank you!

  9. Claire says:

Love this recipe! They're in the oven and it smells delicious. We added paprika to the seasoning and it spiced it up even more. Thank you! :)

FAQs

Why won t my sweet potato fries get crispy? ›

The secret to crispy (instead of soggy) sweet potato fries is to spread them out in an even layer with enough room so that they don't touch. This is especially important if you're making a big batch of fries. Instead of just piling more onto one baking pan, spread them out over two baking pans or cook them in batches.

Why do you soak sweet potatoes before baking? ›

The cold water bath helps rinse the starch off the sweet potatoes so they're a bit more crispy. That said, if you do not have the time, you can still get crispy baked sweet potato fries by using high heat and a little drizzle of olive oil.

Why do you put oil on sweet potatoes before baking? ›

The perfect baked sweet potato is simpler than you think! Lightly oiling the skin and sprinkling with a bit of salt makes for crisp skin and a tender inside. This post may contain affiliate links. Please read our disclosure policy.

What makes sweet potato fries better? ›

Sweet potato fries are slightly higher in calories and carbs but also more nutrient dense than French fries. The greatest nutrient difference is that French fries have no vitamin A, while sweet potato fries are high in this nutrient. Vitamin A is important for your vision and immune system ( 2 ).

How to stop sweet potato fries from getting soggy? ›

Cornstarch really helps to get the outsides crisp!

I've played around with various amounts of cornstarch and olive oil and found the perfect ratio. I've experimented with arrowroot starch as well, and it produced fries that were somewhat less crisp, but it's worth using if that's what you have.

How long to soak sweet potatoes to remove starch? ›

Transfer to a bowl filled with ice and water and let it soak for 30 minutes. The cold water helps with removing excess starch and crisping up the potatoes later. The longer it sits in the ice, the better.

How long should you soak sweet potatoes before air frying? ›

If you'd like, you can soak the sweet potato slices for 30 minutes up to 2 hours before frying to remove excess starch. Personally, though, going through this step didn't make a real difference for my fries. Peels on or off — it's up to you!

Should you rinse sweet potatoes before cooking? ›

Skipping the Scrub-and-Wash Step

Sweet potatoes grow in the ground, and skipping the cleaning step means dirt or grit can end up in your sweet potato casserole. Before cooking or cutting sweet potatoes, wash the skins and give them a scrub with a clean vegetable brush.

Should you boil sweet potatoes before you bake them? ›

Absolutely not. While many might choose to parboil the sweet potatoes before cooking for a shorter cooking time, we advise against it. Roasting sweet potatoes bring out their caramelized flavor yet leave the inside soft and custardy.

Should you poke holes in sweet potatoes before baking? ›

Do you have to poke holes in sweet potatoes before baking? Typically holes are poked into a sweet potato to prevent a potato exploding in your oven. However, the chance of that happening is low, and according to Lifehacker, sweet potatoes will retain more flavor if you don't poke them.

Do sweet potatoes cook at the same time as regular potatoes? ›

To guarantee both kinds of potatoes are done at the same time, prep the Yukon Golds first and put them in the oven while prepping the sweet potatoes. The ten minute start time will guarantee nicely browned Yukon Golds and tender sweet potatoes.

Why are sweet potato fries never crispy? ›

If you don't evenly space your sweet potatoes so they aren't touching, they will not turn out as well. They need the air flow between them to maximize crisp, and any surfaces that are touching won't get the air they need. Halfway through the cook time, take a minute or two and flip them all with tongs.

Is it better to bake or fry sweet potatoes? ›

This can make baked sweet potato fries lower in fat and calories than fried ones. Additionally, baking the fries allows them to retain more of their natural sweetness and flavor, whereas frying can cause them to lose some of their nutrients and taste.

Why do sweet potatoes not go crispy? ›

Don't overcrowd the baking sheet!

This is an important one! If the baking sheet it too crowded, the sweet potatoes will not crisp.

Why are my homemade fries never crispy? ›

If they are still not crispy you might have skipped a step or you might not have let them cool down sufficiently. Make sure to cool them in a single even layer and also make sure that the oil has the right temperature. Or maybe you've used the wrong potatoes to make them.

Why do my sweet potato fries turn out soggy in the air fryer? ›

If your air fryer fries are soggy, it is likely because you over-crowded them in the basket.

Why won't my fried potatoes get crispy? ›

This sure sounds a lot like potatoes that have been stored too long, in too cold of an environment before cooking. When potatoes are held below 41°F for too long a period, the starches convert to sugar and it changes the cooking chemistry.
